coma - the cologne based duo marius bubat and georg conrad have grown in leaps and bounds since their 2008 debut for firm recordings. since then, they have followed with highlight contributions to the last two total series and of course their acclaimed single crystal (kompakt 199) - both of which were released on kompakt. their live shows have established the act as a leading duo locally not to mention earning them fans across europe and asia. on famous , their new 12 for kompakt, we see coma embrace the art of melody and warmth more so than in past releases - an endearing maturity that you hear thoughout this gorgeously produced ep . starting off with playground altona - coma bring their techno/house euphoria to new levels in shimmering bath of disco glow. the ambient warmth of fameless succumbs to a floating bass kick as the sound of children play in the background. as raindrops fell outside of the studio - the boys used it as inspiration for raindrops - a sure winning track on this single as a familiar voice carries you amongst a severely catchy rhythm. a set ender of all set finales

boys and diamonds is unmistakably a pop album but also one that comfortably fits in with kompakts long-standing lineage of genre-refracting releases. you will be hard up find another record that cohesively brings to mind siouxsie rubbing elbows with shabba ranks, giorgio moroder sipping daiquiris in bali, desmond dekker envisioned through skittering footwork, tom tom club sitting in with congotronics, even early madonna produced by chris and cosey. unlikely as all of that sounds, rainbow arabia makes it sound easy. mostly recorded at their home studio in echo park, muppet palace, boys and diamonds was written and produced by the couple with help from their friends in los angeles and beyond. drummer/producer extraordinaire butchy fuego (pit er pat, boredoms, mia) contributes arrangements and beats in places, and icy demons dylan ryan plays on the percussion-heavy island shuffle nothin gonna be undone . the album was mixed at the wonderful hobby shop studios in la by mudrock, who also adds some final production touches on the record. the 11 new songs on the album, were also made possible by the encouragement of peers/heroes in la like former ghosts, fool s gold, secret circuit, abe vigoda, and part time punks dj crew. outside of their hometown, they also found support and inspiration from kindred spirits like pictureplane, spoek mathambo, as well as their new home, the ever-illustrious kompakt

averse to any easy classification, rainbow arabias continent-trekking, kaleidoscope pop is rooted in no particular time or place, employing modern technological processes to an array of musical cultures and eras. the los angeles duo began with the purchase of a lebanese casio that played microtonal scales and eastern beats, with which they quickly recorded their propulsive first ep, the basta, synthesizing bossa nova and industrial post-punk with heavy middle eastern vibes. digging deeper for inspiration from the worldly found sounds of sublime frequencies compilations, their follow-up ep, kabukimono, expanded the color palette of their >fourth world< pop with dark, arabic disco-dancehall jams sitting alongside sunnier moments with caribbean and african flourishes...

pop ambient returns. kompakts beloved series. this is our other arena of bliss, always curated and carefully compiled by label co-owner wolfgang voigt (aka gas). somber times call for more introspective sound scapes - >pop ambient 2011< continues its mission to slowly persuade its signature sound introduced over a decade ago. this year we see the series leaning towards a slightly darker complexion than its predecessors.

thomas fehlmann is integral to kompakt and the labels history. his solo releases and collaborative work with alex patterson as the orb have been some of the kompakts most revered and cherished tunes. following the success of his 2010 full length gute luft (a collection of re-edited versions from his score to the hit documentary 24hr berlin), we start 2011 off with titan one / dfm. on october 16, 2010 thomas fehlmann performed in montreal, canada at the historic molson coors brewery building together with members of the montreal symphony orchestra (osm). together they sought to recreate a version of gustav mahlers classic symphony no. 1 (titan). kompakt is proud to now offer a new recording inspired by that epic concert of symphonic and electronic with a new recording inspired from that performance – renamed as titan one. the hum of cellos and strings conjoin fehlmanns electronics – held together by the sublime, unobtrusive thump of a bass drum. titan one flows with a beauty and edacity that is rarely heard in both classical and electronic music form. the b-side features a new recording inspired from the second piece of the performance - a new version of thomas fehlmanns du fehlst mir from his 2006 kompakt full length visions of blah. reanimated as dfm, the piece again conjoins the different musical worlds in a way we have never heard to such a high standard. a much more upbeat affair than to titan one (of course) bass and keyboards mingle with the symphony the playfulness of the original song rolls throughout dfm. whether as palais schaumberg, the orb, or 3mb (to name only a few alias). fehlmann may have 3 decades of professional recordings under his belt but he continues to prove to the world as being one of the most fascinating and creatively open musicians in his field. this release clearly proves his story is far from over.

datenzauber is electronic dance music following the traces of krautrock-electronica. datenzauber is a crossing of 1/8-bass rock beat and shuffle romanticism with a minimalist disco feeling. datenzauber takes kraftwerks and klaus schulzes analogue soundscapes over the digital highway back on to the dancefloor again. datenzauber commutes in an electric car between cologne and dusseldorf. datenzauber has fun with the necessary seriousness. datenzauber is free of sampling residues, yet nevertheless its historicising, because datenzauber is non-retro, electronic music feeling from the 1970s for 2010. happy new year.

in case you havent figured it out yet, kompakt loves tradition and as you know, we have had a longstanding affair with our beloved japanese producer extraordinaire hiroshi watanabe aka kaito. his 2009 full length trust (komcd74) showcased a deeper, more matured side to kaitos now classic sound.
so with every kaito album comes the custom - the beatless versions. that said, we proudly offer your ears and that was the way - watanabe effortlessly has brought together three of the lead tunes from trust through into the calm waters of his ambient bliss.
so you have and that was the way…kaito once again demonstrates his magic that goes on behind the beat.

gui boratto keeps on giving with these three brand new tunes - a true statement of the tremendous talent he continues to bring to kompakt. he bumps up the bass adds a vocal chorus and teleports the original into a new stratosphere. telecaster is a dark and deep floor leveller. the glam is a rocket - elemental percussions play with a low end synth ride that rolls with a menacing delivery but certain to lay devastation on any dance floor.

hello and welcome to the new decade. we are kicking off the 10s with a smash from the 00s - as a hinge between the decades, so to say. adas >lovestoned< was everybodys favourite track from her fabulous >adaptations< album, a milestone of romatic techno with vocal support by raz o hara. one of this songs biggest admirers is president bongo of gusgus fame. together with jack shidt he forms the dynamic duo gluteus maximus which already caused a stir with their amazing remix for sigur ros >gobbledigook< on kompakt pop. their lovestoned remix is astounding, too. sex, modern, efficient without losing one gramm of soul. the flipside is taken care of gui boratto who is never far away when techno meets pop in such a sensitive way. his remix makes all great things from the original a bit greater and its pushing the romance factor to the max.

> rollerskate< could be the most infectious song your going to hear this year. its far too easy to immediately get drawn in with the organic earthiness of aguayos musicianship. things get mixed up when diegors & the don move towards a more traditional cumbia tuned version and sanfuentes & alex thunders come up with a demented disco bass wobble. last but not least mexicos dark dancer rebolledo brings his signature beat(down) together with matiass mantra to new levels

er hat es wieder getan... seiner eigenen tradition treu bleibend, dem synthetischen ende von disco ein modernes denkmal nach dem anderen zu setzen, schafft auch “don t go” diesen spagat zwischen vergangenheit und zukunft, zwischen glückseeligkeit und gnadenloser abstraktion. “don t go” ist ein klassischer köhncke hit, inklusive infektiösem hook, einer halsbrecherischen und doch mitreissenden bassline und irren Überraschungsmomenten, dieangenehm an der hirnrinde kratzen.... ein herrlicher wahnsinn. auf der b-seite erwartet uns ex-closer musiker dirk leyers mit einem tief pumpenden remix von “(it s gonna be) alright”, einem unserer lieblingstracks desletztjährigen albums “safe and sound”. leyers katapultiert das légère original mitten auf den mainfloor, ohne dabei auch nur einen funken deepness aufzugeben. alle reden über house. wir tanzen lieber dazu.

>exvola stupp< zeichnet sich durch die wighnomy-typische balance zwischen understatement und wahnsinn aus. der track besticht durch einen ziemlich gewagten spannungsbogen. aber man lässt sich gerne zeit, wenn es so schön vor sich hin klöppelt wie hier. >organijk< ist ein waschechter slammer mit chicago-mässig, dreckigen snares, niedlich versponnen orgeleien und vor allem ordentlich dampf unter der haube. ist ja schliesslich ne speicher..

maxime dangles, kompakts junger mann fürs deftige tut sich mit scandium mitbegründer paul nazca und liefert zwei dicke burner ab. dark neptune ist ein sägezahn-power-rocker, wie man ihn auf speicher lange nicht mehr gehört hat. klassische schule - neu interpretiert! aquarel hingegen geht die sache etwas housiger an, wobei hier eher druckvoller berlin techhouse a la e-werk 1993 gemeint ist. kinners, hier ist ganz schön pfeffer drin

eigenlob stinkt, also schnell die wäscheklammer auf die nase. wir haben immer schon gewusst, dass matias aguayo ein jahrhunderttalent ist. seit seinen ersten gehversuchen mit michael mayer als zimt oder später mit dirk leyers als closer musik und mit marcus rossknecht als broke und vor allem auch solo weiss matias immer wieder zu Überraschen. seine dj-/live-sets gelten von buenos aires Über paris bis köln als legendär und: visionär! nach seinem tongue-in-cheek sommerhit minimal lag matias jedoch nicht auf der faulen haut, sondern hat mal eben en passant eine der inspiriertesten techno eps der jüngeren geschichte aus dem hut gezaubert. der titeltrack walter neff ist ein gnadenloser poptechno-ohrwurm und dancefloor-destroyer zugleich. der teufel muss ihm diese bassline verraten haben! one for the ladies... bei rebolledo style schraubt matias das drecklevel kräftig hoch und serviert einen hochenergetischen chicago-meets-baile-funk-meets-pianohouse-slammer. dann rundet matias die platte mit einem weiteren ausnahmetrack ab, carter msp. die bassline ist schlichtweg krank, dabei aber unglaublich sexy und uplifting. ernsthaft, alle drei tracks sind derart brilliant, dass man sich fragt, warum fast alle anderen platten im vergleich mit der walter neff ep so Öde sind? so, jetzt könnt ihr die wäscheklammer wieder abnehmen.

trotz grossem house anteil sind die mugwump tracks der >meditation ep< jeweils ein kleines subgenre für sich, aber ehe wir jetzt anfangen mal wieder neue schubladen zu erfinden, holen wir uns lieber einen drink und gehen tanzen. denn so groovige beats werden nicht alle tage ins vinyl geritzt
